The influence of the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act on leaders in the digital industry

The European Union has decided to impose a number of rules on the leading companies in the digital sector, in order to provide an easier framework for this market.

These measures include the standardisation of charging devices, which will all switch to USB-C. Apple will therefore have to abandon its Lightning charger, which is still used on iPhones. But these measures don't just concern charging connectors. They have also decided to tackle the monopolies imposed on certain applications, such as Google's Play store and Apple's app store. By doing this, the companies will have to make room for competition in relation to these applications by putting in place a simplified process for users wishing to change application.

Interconnection between platforms is also an area that has been taken into account in these texts. From now on, message exchange platforms will be interconnected to facilitate exchanges between different users. For example, an IMessages user will be able to receive or send messages to another platform.

 

The list goes on, as batteries will now have to be removable to make it easier to repair certain smartphones that were previously impossible to repair without a special procedure, often billed at very high rates by the brands. This will enable independent repairers to replace these batteries.

 

 

Finally, the MEPs and European Commissioners have decided to set up moderation teams whose job will be to analyse the algorithms to determine whether they respect users' privacy. If the rules are not complied with, the penalties could go as far as the complete closure of the platform.

All the measures mentioned above will take effect in around 3 and a half years.
